Our reality is constantly shaken by events that should not take us completely by surprise, yet seem to catch us off guard time and time again. These intrusions into reality - whether it is the catastrophic floods and other indicators of the climate crisis, the war in Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic that introduced the notion of a new reality, or the launch of ChatGPT, which suddenly put all the dilemmas of artificial intelligence into question - create a situation that calls for a theoretical shake-up.
How is society reacting to these "ruptures"? How to react to them at all, without succumbing to the temptation of an instant solution - one time with small fixes, the other time with large financial injections? How do we create a regulated response that recognises ruptures as a sign that deeper social change is necessary? How to deal with changes that are unintentionally and uncontrollably triggered as a by-product of an inadequate reaction that only deepens the crisis? What is the current role of philosophy when it joins the general public debate, and what potential does it have to produce a different type of critique within the social discourse?
